Eating Disorders in Adolescent Girls Walden University

Introduction

Eating disorders are a common phenomenon commonly associated with young women andadolescent girls.

This term is defined as lifestyle changes that affect or tend to disrupt the healthy eating patterns of individuals. Technically, Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman (2016) define eatingdisorders as common illnesses characterized by acute disruptions of eating behaviors together with accompanying thoughts and emotions.

They are fatal illnesses that disturb an individual’seating behaviors and may include binge-eating disorder, anorexia nervosa, and bulimia nervosa(Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016). Earlier studies indicated that eating disorders were morecommon among White adolescent girls due to a strong desire to attain slender bodies (Caputo,2019).

The views propagated by Western culture’s society tend to project a preference to slim overthick bodied women. However, with the spreading Westernization in other cultures globally,adolescent girls from minority groups such as the Latinos, African-American, Hispanics, andother races globally tend to exhibit eating disorders more often as they seek to attain the“perfect” slim body look depicted in the Western cultures (Caputo, 2009).

The resultant effectscaused by the desire to attain the “perfect” body shape leads to eating disorders that causetremendous negative consequences in the physiological and psychological development ofadolescent girls across diverse cultures and races.
