Read the materials for this week, including the article on pseudoscience and the overview of Freud’s
theories. In your opinion, are Freud’s theories scientific? Why or why not? What makes a psychological
theory scientific?
Freud was an innovator, though he got things wrong. Freud’s methods may not be scientific, but this
does not mean they are without value. Although Freud did wrongly proclaim psychoanalysis a
science and longed to reveal the biological element of the mind, this was beyond the technology
of his time. I don’t believe his theories are scientific. The understanding of this is still in its
infancy. However, Freud’s theoretical investigations opened the floodgates for our approach to
the unconscious. This mode of our existence essentially defies the approaches of science, it is
vague, deep, and unique to each individual. No two human experiences are alike, and
randomized controlled trials aren’t the best way to understand an individual’s subjective
experience. Using science to approach this subjective experience is like trying to smooth out a
river with a flat iron (Stangor, 2011).

This mode of our existence essentially defies the approaches of science, it is

Applying the scientific method to psychology, therefore, helps to standardize the approach to
understanding its very different types of information. It also allows theories to be tested and
validated instead of simply being conjectures that could never be verified or falsified, this helps
to make a psychology theory scientific. Additionally, a full understanding, prediction, and control
in psychology are probably unobtainable due to the huge complexity of environmental, mental, and
biological influences upon even the simplest behavior.
