It is quite interesting to learn about personalities in psychology. There are four majorperspectives known as trait perspective, social cognitive perspective, humanistic perspective, andpsychoanalytic perspective. There exist various personality theories, and most of the major onesfall in one of these four main perspectives.
Each perspective on personality tries to explain variedpatterns in personality, the formation of the patterns, and how people are different on a personallevel. This paper will focus on the trait perspective and motive perspective, and it will define and describe the perspectives and their key concepts.
The paper will also provide a comparison of thetwo perspectives by highlighting the benefits and drawbacks of each perspective. The trait perspective of personality focuses on determining, measuring, and describing the specific character that forms human personality.
It aims at understanding personality by grouping attitudes and certain types of behavior into traits, which describe the propensity of a person to feel, behave, and think in a particular manner.
Hans Eysenck, and Raymond Cattell are the major theorists of trait theory, and they believe that personality can be understood by recognizing that everybody has specific characteristics that determine their way of behaving.
Hans identified three concepts of trait theory, which are extraversion, psychoticism, and emotional stability- neuroticism. Raymond used factor analysis and came up with sixteen personality traits, which he thought can be used to understand and measure personal differences in personality.
Robert McCrae came up with the big five theory, which was formulated from Raymond and Hans personality trait theories. He developed five main concepts, which form a single personality when collaborated together.
The concepts include neuroticism, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and openness to experience (Shatz, 2004).
