During childhood having poor physical health could have an impact on mental health that could have lingering effects throughout the rest of the individual’s life. Type I diabetes or 1A is a physical condition that affects children (however contrary to popular belief can develop at any time in an individual’s life) (Low, 2016). Juvenile diabetes another common name for Type I diabetes is formed during childhood in contrast to Type II diabetes which develops at a later point in an adult’s life. This auto-immune disease is the result of the pancreas being unable to produce insulin. Insulin is the hormone that helps glucose enter the cells in the process of forming energy. This disease affects millions of children each year. In order to be diagnosed the individual must have 1A at least 1 time during a 12-month period that limits the child’s independence, service that goes beyond routine care, or compensatory mechanisms (APA, n.d.).When comparing genders and Type I diabetes and other chronic illness there could be differing translations that span across the emotional and social factors that children of different genders experience throughout their childhood. Children that develop Type I diabetes along with other chronic illnesses are 3 to4 times more prone to developing mental illness.

The different genders present different types of mental illness in females eating disorders such as bulimia creates a situation that does not allow the body to receive nutrients that are Poor physical and mental health that originates in childhood can impact one’s life well into adulthood. An example of a physical condition that could impact a child’s long-term mental and physical health is diabetes. Diabetes mellitus is a disorder classified as abnormally high blood sugar levels because the body fails to respond to the insulin produced or the body doesn’t make enough insulin [ CITATION Dia19 \l 1033 ]. Going to the doctor can sometimes be scary for both children and adults and for a child, to receive a diagnosis of an incurable but the controllable disease can be overwhelming. When my 17-year-old was 13 she was screened as being pre-diabetic. She had a history of steroid use due to her asthma and it caused her to gain weight. At 13, she weighed over 200 pounds and although she was active and ate relatively healthy, her love of soda pop and snacks such as candy and chips, caused her to have borderline pre-diabetic A1c levels.

A1c is a test where the doctor or nurse pokes your finger to get a drop of blood on a small test strip which is inserted into a small machine that calculates the amount of glucose attached to the red blood cells. As explained by my daughter’s pediatrician, medical professionals prefer this number to be below 5.5%. My daughter was referred to an endocrinologist who worked with us to develop a meal and activity plan that reduced her A1c to normal levels over time. Diabetes requires the use of needles to check blood sugar and administer insulin if needed. Most children like my child, fear needles and hate shots. They also tend to think that a disease diagnosis is a death sentence. Research indicates that children with diabetes reported feelings of denial, fear, guilt, inadequacy, low self-esteem, and sadness [ CITATION Vla10 \l 1033 ]. Vlachioti & Matziou (2010) found that long-term exposure to these feelings can result in poor glycemic control and result in chronic physical and mental complications.
