There are a number of research topics where forensic consultants may not be able to provide definitive answers. The chapters you read provide examples of areas where there is at-least some controversy over either the topic itself or there search findings. For this discussion, pretend you have been hired to provide testimony on an unsettled and/or controversial area of scientific research. Discuss what you would do to prepare yourself for court and how you would present the research that has been conducted. What ethical concerns are raised when discussing unsettled science? What pitfalls might you, as the forensic consultant, expect to face in court? How do you determine if these scientific findings meet, at a minimum, the criteria for FRE702?Reflectively respond to at least two others in this topic. Do you feel your peers are on solid scientific ground? What suggestions do you have that could help them, or suggestions they gave that helped you?

To prepare myself to provide testimony for a controversial area of scientific research I would make sure I have a thorough understanding of the topic I am presenting – in this case I picked polygraph testing. Most importantly I will try to be as prepared as I can to ensure my testimony is qualitative.Polygraph testing is used for a variety of situations. Whether it is for judicial, economic, or national use, polygraphs measure phycological responses (e.g. heart and respiratory rates)(Velasco, 2014). These physiological responses are triggered by the interrogator who asks the individual case-specific questions (Velasco, 2014). Therefore, the polygraph does not detect‘lies’, but it measures an individual’s physical response which can be associated with deception(Velasco, 2014). Both, Daubert and Frye, have provided scientific evidence for the polygraph(Velasco, 2014). Even though the majority of professionals across jurisdiction may not agree.
