What are the pros and cons of substance abuse treatment models used within a prison setting? What would you propose to help remove limitations to substance abuse treatment in a prison setting? Are there any ethical complications to treatment in a prison setting? There are both pros and cons when it comes to substance abuse treatment models within a prison setting. A prison setting may offer several types of substance abuse treatment options. In the article by Zarkin et al. (2011), it says there are 50% of state inmates who have a drug addiction or are dependent on diagnosis requirements, while there are 10% who receive medically based drug therapy. While each has a pro and con there is evidence that has shown substance treatment methods that are used within prisons can help reduce the recidivism (Duwe,2010). While in prison most individuals who are incarcerated for substance abuse must go through some sort of treatment options. When prisons intervene for drug misuse it could compel the inmates to stay in the program which then can result in long-term outcomes.

Duwe (2010)states, “the most promising outcome results have been found for offenders who complete prison-based Therapeutic Community (TC) programs, especially those who participate in port-release-aftercare” (pg. 59). Inmates who are in a TC program longer than 12 months tend to rearrest(Duwe, 2010). A disadvantage to these treatments is the cost restrictions the prisons have (Zarkinet al., 2011). Legislation and policymakers do not fund these TC programs enough to help address any other underlying mental health issues inmates may have.An ethical issue that can be produce is consent.
