The article relates to my topic regarding the impact of lighting, including daylight and non-daylight, on student patrons working or studying in a cafe, and overall environmental satisfaction. The Positive Affect Theory was used as an informed basis for the study, stating that working conditions and environments have a direct effect on task and social behaviors in the workplace [Kim18]. This study observed and surveyed college students, working in the café on their laptops for their dissertations, or other coursework. A threat to internal validity, or the “statements about whether one variable is the cause of a particular outcome” [Ros13],

would be asserting that the cause for the relayed answers from the surveys regarding “eye discomfort” or “sleepiness” was solely based on the lighting within the controlled study environment. This would be identified as problematic because it is ignoring other factors, such as the participants are students working on school work; that variable is not taken into consideration in the collection of survey answers. Another variable that could be looked at is the students’ laptop screen brightness, and how that affects their eye comfort.
