In today’s world, we are continuously exposed to claims surrounding psychology through newspapers, social media, and various forms of communication. Some of the things we read/hear are true and tested, whereas some of them are not. One claim that I have heard about is the lunar effect. The lunar effect claims that human behavior is affected by the different phases of the moon. During times of lunar phases, humans are more likely to act aggressively or violently, become injured due to recklessness, and act unusual (Neil, Colledge 2000). To me, this idea of the lunar effect seems to be pseudoscience due to the ambiguity of the definitions of human behavior given. What classifies or does not classify behavior as “unusual”? How can “unusual” behavior be measured scientifically? Can this research be replicated in another study?

What classifies or does not classify behavior as “unusual”? How can “unusual” behavior be measured scientifically? Can this research be replicated in another study? While an article title claiming that the moon has a significant effect on human behavior is catchy, there are some missing pieces in the information. A study done by Jodi Tasso and Elizabeth Miller found that criminal acts such as robbery, assault, disorderly conduct, and drunkenness occurred more frequently during times of lunar phases than times without a major lunar phase (Tasso, Miller 1976). However, they did find that the majority of categories of criminal acts were not more prevalent during major lunar phases

Homeopathy can is defined as treating disease by administering small doses of natural substances that in a healthy person would mimic symptoms of the disease. According to the Victoria state government of Australia, “Homeopaths say they aim to treat the whole person, taking into account personality, lifestyle and hereditary factors, as well as the history of the disease. Since all people are unique, homeopathic medicines are prescribed to treat individuals (Homeopathy,2015). Much of the research available has offered limited support that this claim has been proven by medical science.

Also, it should be noted that much of medical science concerns itself with physical ailments and psychological research regarding the effectiveness of homeopathic treatments for mental health disorders is even more lacking. The first step would be to define the parameters and vocabulary necessary to develop a question from the observations influenced by pseudoscience. Defining homeopathic psychology would not be helpful in developing a research question because both homeopathy and psychology are umbrella terms encapsulating entire fields of work and research. Narrowing the focus to something manageable requires precision in topic selection and/or areas of study. It is easy to be a homeopathic skeptic when treating a psychological disorder such as anxiety.
