Charles Manson is a historical figure that exhibits grandiosity and self-importance. diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSM–5; American PsychiatricAssociation, 2013) describes narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) as “A pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), need for admiration, and lack of empathy.” These are all characteristics that describe Charles Manson. Manson displayed these characteristics by developing a cult following and convincing his followers to commit 8 murders based on Manson’s “prophesies.” It has been theorized that this event increased Manson’s sense of grandiosity; he was so important and special that he convinced people to commit murder for him(Wells-Marshburn, 2017). Manson frequently proclaimed himself to be the messiah and convinced his followers to worship him like a God. Manson displayed self-importance when he named both of his sons Charles, after himself. He thought of his sons as an extension of himself and his self-importance (Davies, 2012). Manson has also described himself as “the key to the whole planet” during prison interviews.

He also claimed he would one day rule the world and likened himself to the Pope of the Catholic church (Jclass100, 2009).Based on the article by Jean Kim (2019), Charles Manson’s character is most accurately reflected by the grandiose “overt” type of NPD. W. Keith Campbell (2016) describes the grandiose type as being characterized by “extroversion, dominance, and attention seeking.” Mansondisplays all of these characteristics throughout his adult life, even when he was imprisoned forhis crimes. This can be seen through the many prison interviews he participated in. Specifically,Manson is an example of a severe case of the “malignant narcissist” subtype of grandiose NPD.Leah Wells-Marshburn (2017) describes the characteristics of malignant narcissism as an In what way does this person exhibit grandiosity and self-importance?

The person that comes to mind when speaking about a historical figure who portrays a narcissistic personality disorder would be former President Donald Trump.“Individuals with narcissistic personality disorder show an exaggerated sense of self-importance, a preoccupation with being admired, and a lack of empathy for the feelings of others” (Hooley, Nock, & Butcher, 2019). Although I do like and admire our former president, I do have to agree that he portrays certain personality traits that would point towards narcissism. Trump exhibits both grandiosity and self-importance in both his political career and his movie career, based on the show the Apprentice. Trump has made the comment that he is the most loved president of all time. Trump has a high self-promotional style about himself that can be seen in everything he does and says. One of the biggest examples would be his Twitter account. Trump appears to have to capture the audience and make himself feel important to all. Another example of grandiosity is that in many speeches and social media platforms Trump will boast about his fortune and power.Based on the article, which of the narcissism types most accurately reflects the character of this person?
