I chose the case study of Ismail. Ismail is a 25-year-old college student who is suffering from schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a chronic brain disorder with symptoms that fall into several categories. Positive psychotic symptoms include hallucinations, paranoid delusions, and exaggerated or distorted perceptions, beliefs, and behaviors[ CITATION Ame202 \l 1033 ]. Negative symptoms manifest as a loss in the ability to start plans, speak, express emotion, or find pleasure [ CITATION Ame202 \l 1033 ]. Disorganization symptoms are exhibited by confused and disordered thinking and speech, bizarre behavior, and trouble with logical thinking[ CITATION Ame202 \l 1033 ]. Impaired cognition symptoms involve issues with attention, concentration, memory, and a decline in academic performance [ CITATION Ame202 \l 1033 ]. Ismail has exhibited symptoms from all categories. His parents indicated that he was a good student however, over the course of the last year he has locked himself in his room and has failed exams. Ismail doesn’t speak sometimes or is found muttering to himself. He is also under the impression that his parents and neighbors want to cause him harm and that the Devil.

Using one of these mental health case studies, explain which intervention would be appropriate to utilize as a treatment intervention. Describe possible roadblocks that might hinder the effectiveness of treatment, and one or two methods to successfully address these roadblocks. Finally, discuss how the identified intervention would differ if used with a child or adolescent, versus an adult. I chose case #2 for this discussion. The patient was diagnosed with schizophrenia. Interventions for this diagnosis do have roadblocks that would possibly hinder treatment. Many of the symptoms vary and this would determine the course of treatment. The most common treatment would be cognitive behavioral therapy due to the ability to address connections between the behaviors and thought patterns. There are negative and positive symptoms that affect emotions so CBT would be a great start.
