The importance of exploring the impact of the legal system on behavioral and mental health development is critical in finding answers for children entering the system as well as those leaving the system and trying to adjust to normal life. An issue that I have seen while working with youth who have been incarcerated, is the cookie-cutter treatment that is available. Many therapists that work in detention centers believe that it is much easier to apply the same interventions to the group, instead of the individual. Each child or adolescent develops differently and so the approach to treatment would call for different strategies. Taking a firm stance toward common-place interventions can lead to a lower rate of recidivism. It is very important to explore the impact the legal system has on children and the development of mental health issues and behavioral problems, especially when the child must adjust to life after legal supervision. Grisso (2009) observed that a system for classifying mental disorders among children and adolescents does not exist and argues that standardized screening tools forassessment of young people is needed due to a correlation between mental disorders and delinquent behavior.

Grisso (2009) observed that a system for classifying mental disorders among children and adolescents does not exist and argues that standardized screening tools forassessment of young people is needed due to a correlation between mental disorders and delinquent behavior. One issue that affects many adolescents is the ‘one-size-fits-all- approach to implementing treatment and intervention plans. Treatment and intervention plans should be designed with the patient’s needs in mind to ensure positive change and plan completion. The mind of an adolescent is still developing, therefore early intervention can help shift negatively.

Pituitary tumors are abnormal growths that develop within the pituitary gland and can be the result of an influx of hormones used to regulate the body [CITATION Nat192 \l 1033 ]. Carlson & Brinkett (2017) noted that these types of tumors don’t often grow or spread extensively but can cause the gland to decrease the production of hormones. Due to the pituitary gland tumors pressing on Amanda’s optic chiasm, she may have swelling in her eyes which could be very uncomfortable for her and cause her to lose focus academically. She would not have full vision in both her right and left visual fields and may suffer from frequent headaches. Amanda may also be plagued by nausea, vomiting, weakness, issues with her menstrual cycle, frequent urination, and weight loss or gain as a result of hormonal deficiencies [CITATION Nat192 \l 1033 ]. Her social life may suffer due to low self-esteem as well as some of the symptoms she may be.
