Gilbert Daffern & Anderson (2017) argues that there is a small group of persistently violent individual who is the cause of the disproportionate number of violent incidents. Violent offenders are the most dangerous offenders in the criminal justice system after having been arrested and convicted and imprisonment for crimes such as assault, rape, robbery, and homicides. These types of offenders are the most common in the national prison system since they constitute about 49% of the population (Gilbert Daffern & Anderson 2017). The treatment and implementation of any program to care for such offenders begin with a thorough analysis of the individual. The measure of an offender’s risk to recidivism is critical in this treatment because it one of the measures that show the success of any treatment (Novaco, 2020).

The last 20 years have seen research focus on the implementation and evaluation of treatment programs that are effective for dealing with violent offenders. The criminal justice system has focused more on cognitive-behavioral and social learning theory as the best interventions program for this group (Novaco, 2020). Although the approach of treatment is much similar to the model used in dealing with non-violent offenders the program typically encourages the growth of the offender insight into the functional role of the violent behavior and seeks to make them see the alternative behavioral strategies. Such strategies are geared towards helping the individual to deal with conflict in better ways.
