Research Question: What impact does hunger have on the test scores of college students?Hypothesis: Experiencing hunger while taking a test will have negative impacts on college student test scores. The ability to focus is impaired when students have not had a satisfying meal before taking a test, causing attention needed to comprehend the test to be diverted to the distraction of hunger pangs. Staples of the student’s diet also hold indications of success on tests and study habits, predicting poor test scores in the group of students whose diet consists of food with high contents of sugar and carbohydrates, versus those rich in protein and fiber.ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHIESCollege Students Self-Reported Food Insecurity and Correlations with Health and academic PerformanceO’neill, M., & Maguire, J. Retrieved from ?url=?direct=true&db=asn&AN=123429542&site=ehost-live&scope=siteAbstract: “The purpose of the pilot study was to describe the relationships between the following variables among a group of college students who used the campus food pantry: (a)food security and academic performance, (b) food security and student health and (c) health and academic performance. We used a survey research design with a purposive sample of 65 college students attending a rural, midsized, public university in Northern California who were seeking emergency food resources at a campus food pantry.

When food security was measured using a composite food security score, food security and GPA were negatively correlated. There were no statistically significant relationships between the second two sets of variables. However, in a short-answer, open-ended question about the impact of food insecurity on health, students reported health issues such as headaches and low energy. They also reported having trouble concentrating in class and while studying at home when they did not have access to enough food. Results indicated that increasing food availability for college students may improve students’ ability to perform academically.

Further research is needed to examine the relationships between low-income college students’ food security, academic performance, and health. Additionally, further research is needed to explore the potential for state and federal policies currently providing greater access to food (e.g., Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program[SNAP]) and other essential resources (e.g., Housing and Urban Development, Low IncomeHome Energy Assistance Program) to be expanded to include students attending college.”
