So I am split on this issue, I think it’s like 50 / 50 on this issue in our world today. I think law enforcement is trying to do the best they can by catching these individuals before they come into the country. They are using so many resources to prevent drugs to come in and cause more problems like violence and crime. Law enforcement is trying to stop these drugs through airports, border checkpoints, and through the oceans that many smugglers have been caught. Some of these people that have been arrested for smuggling drugs do this because they are either forced to or need the money to help their families out in different countries where they are poor. I think they should continue to arrest these offenders that are caught for smuggling or dealing drugs in big quantities, The people that are carrying a big load of illegal drugs should be locked up and arrested. Now the people who get caught with a few drugs I don’t think they should be.

I think they should continue to arrest these offenders that are caught for smuggling or dealing drugs in big quantities, The people that are carrying a big load of illegal drugs should be locked up and arrested. Now the people who get caught with a few drugs I don’t think they should be. According to the 2017 Crime in the United States reports, “the highest number of arrests were drug abuse violations” (FBI,2018). Now, after reading that statement you may be surprised that I took that stance of not focusing on arrests. My thoughts are this: arresting someone doesn’t work. It makes them sober for that very short amount of time during their jail stay but it is not a continuous effort of the drug addict.

Instead, my suggestion is that officers issue a citation with the contingency of them having a rehab program and date already set in place. This will potentially mitigate the individual returning to the life of drugs. Once they have met in court to answer for the citation, a community outreach personnel or another law enforcement entity can follow up with the individual to ensure they did in fact go to rehab. If they have failed to do so, only then will a warrant be placed for their arrest and the individual be forced to attend rehab and then a jail sentence after.
