Social and Cultural Contributions to Psychological Disorders Monique Fletcher Southern New Hampshire University

The field of abnormal psychology studies complex and unusual behavior that has an impact on an individual’s way of thinking, daily life, and relationships. Biological, Psychological, and Sociocultural factors are three contributors that cause abnormal behavior.

This paper will focus on the sociocultural perspective that identifies how discrimination, socioeconomic status, cultural background, gender, etc., may have an impact on the on-set and/ordevelopment of psychological disorders.

Literature ReviewThe article, “The Expression of Depression in Asian Americans and European Americans”, investigated if both Asian Americans and European American have commonalities in both somatic and depression symptoms.

The researchers of this study predicated that both the Asian Americans and European Americans participants of this study would not have many differences in the levels of somatic symptoms.

Based on previous research performed by Ryder et. al, (2008), the researchers of this study had expectations that the Asian Americans in this would present lesser psychological symptoms than European Americans.

The findings of this study indicated that there were minimal differences of both somatic and psychological symptomsof depression in Asian Americans and European Americans. Additionally, the researchers found less psychologization in Asian Americans than they did in European Americans which was like the studies of Ryder et al. (2008).

Lastly, the researchers concluded that their assumption that cultural differences played a role in the way an individual expressed that they were depressed, specifically the idea that Asian Americans would display their depression in somatic ways.

For somatic symptoms, researchers expected the data would not show a significant difference between the two cultural backgrounds. Regarding the psychological symptoms, researchers expected the findings would be greater for Asian Americans than it would be European Americans.

In regard to discrimination, researchers evaluated whether somatization or psychologization shows any differences in the display of depressive symptomatology for Asian Americans or European Americans.

Researchers predicated that the Asian Americans and European Americans participants of this study would not have many differences in the levels of somatic symptoms.
