even though privacy issues, cost, and other negative factors dealing with theft, loss, or damage can be an issue it gives medical personnel access to comprehensive information of an individual’s health and availability of such information is imperative at point of service, especially in emergencies, or where coordination of care is issue.
Background and RationaleAccording to the FDA (2012), “Medical devices are classified and regulated according to their degree of risk to the public. Devices that are life-supporting, life-sustaining or implanted must receive agency approval before they can be marketed.
FDA’s scrutiny does not end when a drug or device is approved for marketing; the agency collects and analyzes tens of thousands of reports each year on devices after they have been put on the market to monitor for any unexpected adverse reactions” (Protecting and Promoting Health).
