We hear often from the executive team that we need data and metrics to support requested needs, oftentimes related to equipment or staff. One of the metrics used to get new FTE’s is productivity.

The way this is calculated is total hours of staffing compared to the calculated hours needed to produce the number of units of service that were provided.

This formula does a good job of representing the fact that, as variable staff, we should be flexing down staffing for lower volumes and up for higher volumes.

It does not account for the amount of resources required to complete the work or other factors impacting the way work gets done.

For example, with therapy, we are required to do a lot of interdisciplinary communication regarding patients to facilitate discharge or clarify activity expectations for the patient.

This is not direct billable time, but time nonetheless. Work is getting done but just not in the way that “work” is defined in the formula. I do agree, though, that the flex stati
