How do we, as leaders, run operations in markets that we may not fully understand? How do we manage teams that are comprised of culturally diverse individuals whom we may be unable to easily relate to and understand?

These are questions that leaders in today’s globalized marketplace must remain cognizant of and strive to answer if they want to be successful.

Leaderscan take two approaches when attacking these challenges, one is to extensively use expatriates and send their western workers out to their field offices in other countries, and the other is to use bi-cultural intermediaries to help integrate cross-cultural teams. (Bryant, 2008).

The first is an extreme and oftentimes costly method of breaching cultural barriers, however it only makes operations easier for the leaders who do not have to physically relocate. For the staff that is moved across the globe, the cross-cultural barriers are actually magnified with this method.

The second way that leaders can bridge cultural divides is through the use of bi-cultural intermediaries. By hiring and utilizing people who have cultural awareness of the various different cultures that a team stems from, leaders can mitigate some of the road blocks that cross-cultural teams face.

These bi-cultural intermediaries serve as the middle man and can help bridgethe gap on cross-cultural teams. As an individual, I can help to bridge cultural gaps by adopting a cross-cultural perspective in my self-leadership.

According to Alves, “a cross-cultural consideration of self-leadership is a worthwhile pursuit to explore the ways in which the practice of self-leadership may be shaped byculture-dependent ways of thinking and acting.” (2008).

In this, if I remain aware of cultural difference, I can gear my self-leadership to better align with the various cultures that I might encounter in business. The globalization of business today presents unique challenges for currentleaders as well as the future leaders of industry.

To be effective in today’s global business environment, leaders must surpass cultural boundaries and become what Bishop refers to as, “global leaders.” (2013). To become a global leader, you must adopt a global mindset (Bishop
