Week 3: Assignment – Ethical Leaders in Action Reflection

Ethics plays an instrumental role in leadership and in turn, decision making.I believe that “ethics is the heart of leadership.” As leaders, we have a great deal of influence on the development of staff, work environments, and outcomes of the company as a whole.

As stated in The Importance of Ethics in Leadership by Anna Martin, “An ethical leader works to create an open conversation, and working practice, that encourages the sharing of ideas, knowledge and vision so that the benefit of the learning is shared.”

The resulting impact can be an increase of positive outcomes and reduction of risk or negative outcomes. The article also states that “An ethical leader not only has high values and the determination to succeed but also understands the importance of building a strong framework that allows others to follow the examples set so that everyone benefits.”

Looking at this in terms of decision making, “assuming the benefits of leadership” also means “assuming ethical burdens”. From our reading this week in Chapter 21, “the Ethics Check” is a great way to look at ethical considerations in decision making.

However,I would expand the questions to include: Would I want to be on the receiving end of the action? and Is it ok for everyone to take this action? In the end ethical decisions should “cast light, not shadow”.

The methods of action in my IDP will play a role in shaping the mission and vision of my organization by ensuring that my staff “define and achieve success” in a rapidly changing business environment while “maintaining the highest standards of integrity, ethics, and quality”.

To do this, I will build trusting relationships, develop staff professionally, and make ethics a priority. Each of these actions are intertwined and are only most successful in that way.

In building a trusting relationship, one in which the staff person is “trusting enough” to open up about real issues and what kind of assistance would be beneficial, I will be able to better respond to the needs of my staff.

This includes having open and frank discussions regarding ethics and values. The trusting relationship is the foundation leading to the success of intentionalefforts such as: guiding questions (or process consultation) to build capacity rather than giving
