“Today’s complex business environments require even greater skills at leadership than ever before. “Cookie-cutter” formula-based management was probably never correct, but in today’s environment it will inevitably lead to disaster.” (Zimmerer & Yasin, 1998).

The leadership framework that I am most familiar with, and one that has proved to be quite effective, is grounded in five critical concepts:

1.An effective leader knows their stuff. This does not just relate to technical knowledge of the task at hand, but also knowledge related to managing people, identifying risks and trends, and being knowledgeable of organizational policies and procedures.

2.An effective leader works hard to refine their skills on a continual basis and applies this refinement to all of the areas identified in concept 1 above. An effective leader also strives to refine and reinvent the way that business is done.

3.An effective leader knows themselves and seeks to present themselves as someone who sets a good example. It like a novel idea, leading by example, but as simple as it is it is also critical to success as a leader. If you set a good example, people will follow you not just in attitude, but also in an overall vision.

4.An effective leader is aware of what they must accomplish and tackles tasks head-on. This is not just related to technical tasks, but also to how they manage and handle their staff and its tasks.

5.An effective leader knows their people. In order to lead a successful team, a leader must be aware of the capabilities, strengths, and weaknesses of their team and delegate tasks accordingly.

While these five dimensions differ from those provided in this weeks’ lecture in the way that they are worded, they are not all that different than those provided to us: Model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act, and encourage the heart.
