IT133 Software Applications 1 Unit 1 eGuide Introduction to Windows®and File Management Welcome to IT133 Software Applications. If you are serious about achieving success, mastering Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office®are key skills that you will need.

This eGuide is meant to zero in on exactly what you need to know build your skills. All of the examples and exercises use Windows 7®and Microsoft Office 2010®. We have organized the eGuide in three sections. First, we explain the concept; second, we provide a chance for you to practice; and third, you can see how it’s done.

Use this eGuide often; you will learn something new every time! Key Concepts Desktop Mouse Operations Basic Window Features File Management Software Desktop When you first turn on your computer, you may be asked to enter your login credentials (username and password).

The desktop will then appear. The desktop is the area on your screen that contains a variety of icons, including the Start button and the taskbar. Your desktop may resemble one of the following figures depending on the operating system you are using see Figure 1.1 below for examples.

Parts of the Desktop

Icon: A graphical symbol/picture that denotes a program, file, or command.

Program/Application:Programs can be installed on your computer or may have been installed prior to your purchase. These programs can be used to create documents, spreadsheets, or presentations. Microsoft Word is an example of a program.

Start Button: The Start button contains shortcuts to programs that are installed on your computer. The Start button is located at the bottom left side of the desktop. Left click on the Start button to open the Start menu. Taskbar: A horizontal bar usually located at the bottom of the desktop where you can launch and monitor any applications that may be running. The taskbar can be moved to another location on the desktop.

Windows Explorer Icon:Located on the taskbar. It manages your files and folders. An example of a desktop appears in Figure 1.2.

When you click the Start button, the Start menu will open. The Start menu will resemble Figure 1.3

Practice oClick on the Start button on your desktop. The Start menu will appear. oTo exit the Start menu, click the Esc key on your keyboard OR click the Start button again to exit. .Mouse Operations You will use your mouse to perform various tasks on your computer.
