Which site did you choose and why?

I chose Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) because we have all at some time of our life have suffer from a Urinary Tract Infection and selected the National institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) for my research.

What medication did you choose?

What classification does the medication fall under? Most UTIs are caused by bacteria, which are treated with bacteria-fighting medications called antibiotics or antimicrobials (NIDDK, 2012). I chose Zithromax as a treatment medication.

Zithromax is used to treat many different types of infections caused by bacteria. Zithromax is a Macrolide antibiotic. This medication can be administered orally(capsule, tablet or suspension), intravenous, and ophthalmic.

Some contraindications for this medication are History of cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction associated w/ prior use of therapy; known hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin, or any macrolide or ketolide drug (PDR, 2016).

Does it indicate the mechanism of action and clinical indications?

The mechanism of action for Zithromax is macrolide; acts by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible microorganisms and interferes w/ bacterial protein synthesis (PDR, 2016).

Is there concern regarding side effects or interactions that the patient should be educated about?
