Assignment 21: Persuasion
To persuade is to influence. Let’s say I want to persuade you to stop smoking. How could I influence you to kick your nicotine addiction? Most authorities will tell youthat there are five principles of persuasion.
Just the Facts
With respect to smoking, it isn’t hard to be well armed with facts. Just a modicum oftime spent with Google or some other search engine will reveal that smoking isassociated with cardiovascular disease, lung cancer, and emphysema.
If that weren’tbad enough, smoking can make your teeth yellow and result in premature aging. Factssuch as these can influence people’s attitudes, but only if you make sure you have thefacts straight.
Telling someone that “everybody knows” that smoking is bad for yourhealth isn’t very convincing, if only because there are still lots of smokers aroundwho don’t seem to know that.
Refer to Authority

In many respects, gathering facts and citing authorities are closely related. Facts thatconvince usually originate with experts and professionals. So, for example, if you’retrying to persuade someone you care about to quit smoking, just citing the facts maynot be enough.
Directly citing the American Cancer Society, a prominent scientist, orthe American Lung Association may give your facts an added measure of weight anda lot more impact.
Provide Examples
In an effective persuasion paragraph, you should always provide facts that supportyour assertions. What we’ve looked at here already should make that clear.
However, you should also understand that many persuasion paragraphs address issues that arebest addressed through appeals to emotions and attitudes. Let’s say you’re trying topersuade your neighbors to construct a playground on an available vacant lot.
Let’salso assume that the owner of the lot, who lives elsewhere, has no objection tobuilding a playground on his property if the people in your neighborhood are willingto pay for the slides, jungle gyms, swings, etc. The “facts,” in this case, are likely tobe focused on the benefits of the project.
So, in effect, the benefits become yourexamples. For instance, the kids will benefit from more outdoor exercise and lesstime spent with video games. As kids learn to play together, they’ll develop socialskills, like cooperation and learning to share.
As adults volunteer to help withplayground construction and/or serve as playground monitors, the neighborhood willdevelop a sense of community.
So, as you can see, the success or failure of theplayground project will depend on appealing to the feelings parents (and even single adults) may have about the health and welfare of children in general and the neighborhood children in particular.
Truth Has Consequences
If you do X, you can expect Y to happen. If you don’t do X, be prepared for Z tohappen. Either we raise property taxes, or we’ll have to close the Aubrey HeightsElementary School. If that happens, hundreds of kids will be spending an hour or
