Assignment 9: Revising for Consistency and Parallelism

Consistency of TenseThe word “tense” comes from the Latin word for “time”—tempus. The tense of a verb tells us whether the author is writing about the present, the past, or the future.

In order not to confuse your readers, it’s important to use the same verb tense throughout a sentence or paragraph. That doesn’t mean you can’t change from, say, present to past tense in a sentence or paragraph.

But, if you do, you have to make it clear that you’re now writing about the present, past, or future.

For example:

During my high school years, my understanding of the opposite sex was close to zero; today, in my mid-30s, my understanding of the opposite sex is near the freezing marksometimes icy, sometimes watery, but always confused.

The passage below, from Baldwin’s writing, is written in the past tense.

Of course nobody had to do any kind of work in that happy time. There was no such thing as sickness or sorrow or old age.

Men and women lived for hundreds and hundreds of years and never became gray or wrinkled or lame, but were always handsome and young. They had no need of houses, for there were no cold days nor storms nor anything to make them afraid.

What would happen if we switched to the present tense? We might get a paragraph that looks like this:

Of course nobody has to do any kind of work in (our) happy time. There is no such thing as sickness or sorrow or old age.

Men and women live for hundreds and hundreds of years and never become gray or wrinkled or lame, but are always handsome and young. (We) have no need of houses, for there are no cold days nor storms nor anything to make (us) afraid.

Notice that we need to change some words for the paragraph to make sense. Specifically, we have to shift from second person to first person.

We also have to make sure the verbs fit with the subject. Thus, “Men and women live for hundreds and hundreds of years and never become gray or wrinkled or lame . . .”

The compound subjectMen and womenrequires new verb tenses: live and become. Making these changes assures us that our verb tenses are consistent.
