After reading several of the articles from the
Nature
debate on peer review, what do you think is
the best way that articles in psychology should be selected for publication? What are the key
strengths of your suggested method? The weaknesses? When responding to your classmates,
offer an alternative perspective to their suggestions or point out factors that they did not consider.
After reading the assigned articles on peer review as well as the chapters in the textbook
on peer review, I believe the best way articles in psychology should be selected for publication is
through peer review. Doing the research on peer review has definitely shown me that there are
ways the process could be improved upon, but that it is a pretty sound process for scientific
research publication. Just like anything in this world no article is flawless and the system is
trustworthy, but you must verify for yourself! The reason for this is that even the most respected
journals have published fraudulent or seriously flawed material despite the peer reviews and all
the precautionary measures taken (Wager, 2006).

Just like anything in this world no article is flawless and the system is
trustworthy, but you must verify for yourself! The reason for this is that even the most respected
journals have published fraudulent or seriously flawed material despite the peer reviews and all
the precautionary measures taken (Wager, 2006). I also found it interesting that one of the
articles stated that peer reviews are not currently designed to detect deception, nor does it
guarantee the validity of research findings (Lee, 2006). This article also proposed many different
ways to keep peer reviews valid as well as improve the process. While peer review does seem
to be relatively sound, the few things that could be improved upon are noted in this article. The
key strengths of peer review are the long process it entails, as well as the difficulty of actually
getting published. The weaknesses are that no method is perfect and errors can still slip through
the cracks regardless of the precautions taken.
