Galileo and the Church

It has always been known that the church and the field of science do not get along very well when it comes to theories regarding cosmological and theological beliefs. Representatives of the church have always followed the rules of the Bible, whereas scientists typically base their findings off facts and observations.

One main character during the scientific revolution was Galileo Galilei. He was a mathematician and a scientist, as well as a natural philosopher. Although Galileo had good intentions of vocalizing his findings through his pieces of work, the Catholic Church did not agree with him.

This essay dives into the relationship between Galileo and the Church and examines the climate of the time, as well as the trials of Galileo.After Copernicus released his idea of heliocentrism to the public and Pope Paul III, the Church slowly began to reform.

The idea of heliocentrism (sun-centered theory) went against what the Bible preached, which was geocentrism, the idea that the Earth is the center of all celestial bodies. According to Lindberg, “the church bureaucracy was a great deal more worried about controversy… it took a much stricter view of biblical interpretation…” (Lindberg 45).

The church was concerned when Galileo started revealing his findings regarding heliocentrism because there had been previous scientists and philosophers who had questioned the church’s beliefs. But Lindberg raises a good question when he writes, “…who had the right to determine cosmological (and other scientific) truth,” (Lindberg 33).

This question will be examined closer when looking at the relationship between science and religion in the current age, but something to keep in mind when thinking about the church and science is that both topics are different in their own way.

The Bible and the church are based more on faith than science and fact, whereas science is more factual, rather than believing in some higher power to find the answers. Because Galileo was preaching theories that went against church beliefs, he ran into sometrouble with the men of the church.

To set the stage, Galileo had a friend within the church’s system, Urban VIII. Urban was very fond of Galileo, and even wrote him a “poem honoring Galileo for some of his telescopic discoveries…” (Lindberg 50).

It is obvious that both men werefond of each other, but when Galileo wrote a letter to Castelli, a friend and student of Galileo’s, arguing that the “sole purpose of the Bible was to persuade readers ‘of those articles and propositions which are necessary for… salvation and surpass all human reason,’” (Lindberg 46)

Galileo sparked quite a reaction from people within the church hierarchy. Galileo took on Copernicus’s views for a period of time, and when this letter was revealed to other eyes, people of the church were not happy to hear the accusations Galileo was making.
