The Role of Women in Ancient Egypt
Every community in history has been influenced by both men and women to varying extents. During the many years of the kingdom of Egypt, women certainly played a role despite men’s dominance in many areas of their society.

The Role of Women in Ancient Egypt
Every community in history has been influenced by both men and women to varying extents. During the many years of the kingdom of Egypt, women certainly played a role despite men’s dominance in many areas of their society.
In the following paper, the role of women and their lives in society in terms of government, religion, military, business, the household and personal lives during the New Kingdom (1550 BC to 1070 BC) in Ancient Egypt will be investigated and discussed in terms of a just, good and sustainable community.
Government in Egypt was in essence a military state headed by the pharaoh. There is little presence of women in this area of society, in fact women were not allowed to hold positions in the government (Robins 111).
The idea of a women in government, and thus needingthe ability to read and write, was so preposterous at this time that there is almost no evidence thatmany women were even literate (Robins 114). A
lthough women could not hold positions directlyin the bureaucracy there is evidence that women whose husband had great power in the community were able to act under his authority. For instance, in a work by McDowell, there is a case discussed in which a woman is taken to court because she entered a store that she had not had permission to enter (McDowell 222).
When the women was asked why she had opened the store without permission, she responded that her husband was the keeper (McDowell 222).
Her case did not indeed hold up as her husband had already been moved to another position, but the case implies that had he not already been in another place of power, that the incident would have been acceptable (McDowell 222).
In two similar instances discussed in Robin’s book, women collectedtaxes in the name of their husbands without any reprimands (Robins 124). There are also incidences of this as Graves-Brown discusses in her own book,Dancing for Hathor (85).
Although it is a possibility that these women were acting under their husband’s name without permission, it is just as likely that these high ranking women were acting under their husband’s power as was a common societal practice.
Even if women were allowed to exercise their husband’s power, it was likely this occurred only through a husband’s permission, in essence lending women only an idea of power whilst stripping them of any political power themselves.
“Egyptian kingship was inherently masculine; religious texts clearly link masculine sexual potency with transformation” (Cooney). Despite this there is one case in which a women ruled.
She is the only woman in known history who successfully navigated her way into power during a peaceful time, rightfully earning her the name Hatshepsut, which means “The Foremost of Noble Women” (Cooney).
Hatshepsut ruled as a female king, because queen was a word used only in relation to a woman who was married to the male pharaoh (Cooney). Despite being
