The mystifying character Iago from the Shakespeare play Othello has boggled the minds of audiences for hundreds of years. The question on every tongue is “why did he do it?” and the answer lies within Iago’s self.

Throughout the play it seems as if Shakespeare has surprises around every corner with what Iago’s next big move is going to be, but everything Iago does makes sense. Closer examination of Iago will show much of his actions were actually pretty predictable because he has a very internal locus of control.

Also throughout the play Iago employs many defense mechanisms that explain just why he did some of the things that captivated the audience. What would really answer the questions of audiences everywhere though, is the matter of morality. What is Iago’s view of how wrong his actions may be?

Does Iago even have a moral code? These are things to ponder in trying to find Iago’s motives. A locus of control is whether or not you believe “that a causal relationship exists betweenyour behavioral choices and their consequences” (Hock 190).

Rotter explains this to mean that the consequences of your behavior are either considered under your personal control for some people or they may be “determined by forces outside yourself”. This idea of where people place the responsibility for what happens to them is a locus of control and is characterized as either internal or external.

I ago fits the description of internal locus of control in that they “gain information from the situations in their lives in order to improve their future behavior” (Hock 194). This is true in the fact that in his manipulations, Iago has a loose plan but also lets things fall into place naturally along the way.

For example, when Cassio takes Desdemona by the hand and walks away with her, Iago sees this as an opportunity to make Othello mad at Cassio. “With as little a web as this I will ensnare as great a fly as Cassio” (Act II Scene VIII). He is picking upthe clues he will give to Othello along the way.

Iago is smart to adjust his plan as he goes and this shows he is not taking uncalculated risks (another internal trait) because a plan needs to
