Abstract

The modern organization is one of the most critical innovation in recent history, and it will continue to evolve as long as humanity continues to exist.

Many theorists tried to understand how organizations work from recent memory. Scholars came up with nine schools ofthought, and they are as follow: Classical Organizational Theory, Neoclassical Organizational Theory, Human

Resource Theory, Modern Structural Organizational Theory, Organizational Economics Theory, Power and Politics Organizational Theory, Theories of Organizational Culture and Change, Reform Though Changes in Organizational Culture, and Theories of Organizations and Environments[UMU18].

In this case study of Biotech, the three women depicted represent three different schools of thought. Geraldine exemplifies the Classical Organizational Theory, Melanie symbolizes the Contemporary Schools of Management Thought,and Valerie epitomizes the Power and Politics Organizational Theory.

Introduction

There are nine schools of thought as described by scholars and theorists in recent memory[UMU18]. In this case study of the Research and Development (R&D) department of Biotech Health and Life Products, the schools of thought demonstrated through three women leaders the company.

Geraldine Barney Garrett well represents the Classical Organizational Theory. Her granddaughter Melanie Malone exhibits the representation of the Contemporary Schools of Management Thought. Finally, long-term department head Valerie Harper exemplifies the Powerand Politics Organizational Theory.

As Geraldine is thinking about retiring, it is vital that she picks the most capable successor to take her place to run the department. Both Melanie and Valerie are excellent candidates. However, Geraldine will find that Melanie is the better option. Not only because she is family but also because of her management style.

In this forever evolving market, the values of Contemporary Schools of Management Thought that Melanie represents such as employee involvement and customers oriented philosophy will gear the R&D department toward the better future.

Geraldine Garrett and the Classical Organizational Theory

The classical school is the oldest recognized school of management thought. This school of thought discusses techniques to achieve work and operate a business as efficiently as possible.

Henry Fayol is the theorist leading this study and laid the foundation for the scientific management. He identified management as a continuous process of evaluation.

Many considered him as the Father of Management. Henry Fayol described that there are 14 principlesof management but in this discussion, let us examine a few of them and how they are relevant to Geraldine’s management method such as centralization, initiative, order, the unity of direction
